Kosmo the Safety Kat Makes Appearance at Patient Safety Fair

Fountain Valley, Calif. — March 6, 2006- “Kosmo the Safety Kat,” Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center’s safety mascot, is scheduled to make an appearance in recognition of National Patient Safety Awareness Week (March 5-11). The national theme, Our Patients–Our Partners–One Team–One Goal, emphasizes patient and family-centered care. It also encourages hospitals to actively engage their community in patient safety activities.

The week’s educational activities will be highlighted by a Patient Safety Fair, scheduled for Tuesday, March 7th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Employees will participate in safety related games and activities and have the opportunity to take a photo with Kosmo the Safety Kat!

In addition to its annual celebration of Patient Safety Awareness Week, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital has an internal, year-round awareness campaign focusing on several issues including fall reduction, reduced infections and safety of medication administration. To reduce infections, the importance of hand washing is promoted. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention cites hand washing as the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection. The Quality Resources Management Department at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital directs hospital staff, physicians, family members and visitors to make a commitment to wash their hands thoroughly and often, particularly when working with or visiting a Fountain Valley Regional patient. Waterless hand foam is available throughout the hospital and posters and other collateral are posted to remind others of the importance of hand washing.

“Infection prevention is not just something to talk about. All healthcare workers, patients and families have a responsibility. That responsibility starts with making sure that our hands are cleaned before and after assisting a patient. If we all work together, we can reduce the risk of acquiring preventable infections,” says Debbie Keel, CEO, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center.
