Orange County's First Accredited Chest Pain Center

June 6, 2007  Fountain Valley, Calif. — Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center recently received accreditation by the prestigious Society of Chest Pain Centers, as an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI (balloon angioplasty), the only accredited Chest Pain Center in Orange County.

The Society of Chest Pain Centers evaluates facilities nationwide to ensure they meet or exceed quality-of-care measures in acute cardiac medicine (www.scpcp.org)

“The accreditation shows we have a detailed and well-designed process in place to early diagnose and treat patients. “This accreditation is a process improvement project that allows the entire hospital to be involved in patient outcomes. Other hospitals may say they’re a Chest Pain Center, but they may not be accredited. There’s a big difference”, said Lynn Redwater, Director of Cardiovascular Services at FVRH.

One of the goals of a Chest Pain Center is to significantly reduce the time it takes for a patient experiencing symptoms of a possible heart attack to see a physician, thereby reducing the time to treatment during the critical early stages when treatment is most effective. The other goal is to provide a specialized observation setting in which physicians are better able to monitor patients when it is not clear whether they are having a heart attack or other problem.

Following the Society’s essential components of a Chest Pain Center, FVRH has developed a comprehensive program that includes community outreach working with Emergency Medical Services (EMS). In fact, the hospital recently raised $60,000 for the city of Fountain Valley to help put EKGs inside EMS trucks.

“We have an obligation to provide the finest care possible to our community,” said interventional cardiologist Arthur Calick, M.D., Medical Director of the Chest Pain Center at FVRH. “It’s about saving lives. We have to do the right thing and the best thing. That’s our mission.”

Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center will be celebrating this achievement with a ribbon cutting ceremony and press conference on Monday
June 25, 2007 at 12:30 PM in front of the hospital main entrance, reception immediately following in the Saltzer Conference Room.
