Diseases & Conditions

Maintaining your health is vitally important as you age and move through various stages of life. As medical research on women’s health continues to move forward, the specialists at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center stay up to date on all gynecologic conditions and surgical procedures and technologies. We want to share that information with you. Below, we provide information on common gynecological conditions treated with surgery.

Adnexal tumors

This type of growth occurs on the organs as well as the connective tissues surrounding the uterus. Adnexal tumors are most often noncancerous, but some can be malignant.

Bartholin's cysts

This type of cyst occurs when the duct of the Bartholin's gland becomes blocked, resulting in the development of a fluid-filled cyst. The Bartholin's glands are a pair of glands between the vagina and the vulva that produce lubrication when they are stimulated.

Cervical dysplasia

This condition is the abnormal growth of cells on the cervix's surface. Considered a precancerous condition, it is typically the result of a sexually transmitted infection with a common virus — the Human Papillomavirus or HPV.

This is a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it. It is extremely common and can be a very painful condition for the women who suffer from it.

Incompetent cervix

Also referred to as a cervical insufficiency, this is a condition that occurs when weak cervical tissue causes or contributes to premature birth — or possibly the loss of the fetus — in an otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy.

Ovarian cysts

These cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the ovaries. They are extremely common and most frequently occur in women during their childbearing years.

Struma ovarii

This condition is a rare ovarian tumor characterized by the presence of thyroid tissue that comprises more than 50 percent of the overall mass of the tumor. The tumor can be benign or malignant and is often treated with surgery.

Uterine fibroids

Fibroids are a type of tumor, usually benign, that grows inside the uterus. They are extremely common and often lead to increased or prolonged menstrual bleeding.
