Your health and wellness is our only focus at the Center for Breast Care at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center. We provide comprehensive care from diagnosis to post-operative recovery. The medical team at the center uses state-of-the-art imaging technology to more quickly discover abnormalities. The new equipment includes digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast ultrasound biopsy and stereotactic breast biopsy. Additionally, MRI and 64-slice CT services are provided at other locations on the hospital campus.
Digital mammography
The digital mammography has been proven better than film versions in detecting issues in dense breast tissues. It can be hard to detect abnormalities in breast tissue that is dense. Many younger women or women who are going through or already have completed hormone replacement therapy often have dense breast tissue. In both these cases, digital mammography provides a better visual of what’s inside. The technologist can see issues with breast positioning in real time and make adjustments right away for a better picture. This can save time with reduced call backs. A computer-aided-detection (CAD) system analyzes the image marking suspicious areas for a radiologists to review. When the radiologist has the digital files, he can enlarge or increase contrast to get a better view. This technology provides a more precise mammogram.
Stereotactic breast biopsies
Fountain Valley also offers improved technology for stereotactic breast biopsies. Patients lie down on a specially designed table created just for breast biopsies. The breast that’s being imaged projects through an opening while the table is raised for the biopsy to be performed. A hollow needle is passed through the skin and guided exactly to the area of concern shown in advanced computer imaging. Greater precision in identifying the exact location of the anomaly and use of a larger needle allows for fewer tissue samples, to be taken. The procedure is faster and less painful for the patient.
GE Healthcare’s Logiq 9™
The Center for Breast Care at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital also has new ultrasound technology, GE Healthcare’s Logiq 9™, for breast imaging. Breast ultrasound is used most often as a diagnostic tool in cases where a breast anomaly can’t be classified using mammography.
The center is accredited by the American College of Radiology.
