Preparing for Your Newborn

The first few weeks of new parenthood can be challenging and overwhelming. Here’s what you can do to get ready for those early days at home with your baby.


Take hospital classes.
In addition to childbirth preparation classes, consider other classes for expectant parents, such as infant breastfeeding, newborn care, infant CPR and even car seat safety. The more you know ahead of time, the more in control you’ll feel once the baby arrives.

Rely on the lactation consultants.
Even if you’re not having any problems breastfeeding, it’s still a good idea to have a lactation consultant spend some time with you and your baby while you’re still in the hospital. That way, the consultant can spot any issues that may become problematic once you get home (like a baby not latching on properly), and help you correct them.

Take any and all offers to help.
Feeding and caring for a newborn is a full-time job in itself. Having other people help with cooking, cleaning and other household responsibilities can help make the adjustment to a new baby easier.

Take care of yourself, too.
While you’re caring for your newborn, don’t forget to take care of yourself, too, so you can properly heal and recover from childbirth. Sleep whenever your baby is sleeping, make sure you’re having healthy, regular meals, and don’t be afraid to tell visitors that you need time by yourself. Getting outside for a walk every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes, can also make a big difference in your mood and frame of mind.

Select a pediatrician.
We recommend that you select a pediatrician or family practice physician before you come to the hospital for the birth of your baby. Please check with your insurance company for a list of providers as you make your selection.

 

If you have not selected a physician prior to delivery, or if your physician does not have privileges at our hospital, the on-call pediatrician will provide care for your baby while you are here.
